In May 1900, Bishop Peter Verdaguer confirmed 41 at Immaculate Conception in Skidmore in a crowded church “to which many could not gain admittance,” wrote the Southern Messenger in its May 31, 1900 issue. The congregation had not yet achieved parish status–that would come in 1915–but had already been around for nearly a decade. - South Texas Catholic by Alfredo E Cardenas.
The first Immaculate Conception Church was built by the Bishop of Corpus Christi, Most Reverend Emmanual B. Ledvina, with funds given by the Catholic Church Extension Society of Chicago. The present church, originally built of wood about 1942, was restyled in brick nearly 25 years later. There were resident priests from about 1915 until 1958. Due to financial conditions there was insufficient support for a resident priest. During this time the missionaries of the Holy Family from Beeville served the parishioners. Between 1958 and 1967 the Altar Soceity under Mary McFall maintained the church.
In 1967 Father Leonard Kelly was appointed resident pastor upon request. Subsequently, during the years 1967 to 1974, the church was renovated and remodeled to comply with the Church's revised liturgy. The parish has also been blessed since 1982 with the presence and work of the Sisters and lay members of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity. The first parish council was elected in 1989 and the strong spirit of discipleship remains today among the parishioners.
St. Francis Xavier, the mission church, services those residents in Tynan. The mission was completed in 1940 with funding from the Catholic Church Extension Society.
